Monday Music Madness!
Posted by PhantomFire on Apr 09, 2012 12:26 pm
Hello! And welcome to the Forth installment of "Monday Music Madness!"
This week we have eight music suggestions for you to try for the Golden Oldies!!

We start off this week with a suggestion by Dragonara #7

Band Name:The Beatles.
The Beatles were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960, and one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed acts in the history of popular music.[1] The group's best-known lineup consisted of John Lennon (rhythm guitar, vocals), Paul McCartney (bass guitar, vocals), George Harrison (lead guitar, vocals) and Ringo Starr (drums, vocals). Rooted in skiffle and 1950s rock and roll, the group later worked in many genres ranging from pop ballads to psychedelic rock, often incorporating classical and other elements in innovative ways. Their enormous popularity first emerged as "Beatlemania"; as their songwriting grew in sophistication by the late 1960s, they came to be perceived by many fans and cultural observers as an embodiment of the ideals shared by the era's sociocultural revolutions.
Here now, one of their prettiest songs.."In my Life"
Enjoy!
In My Life

Next up ... The boss!! Bruce Springsteen. Thank you Allira #8!

Band Name:Bruce Springsteen
Bruce got his start in New Jersey/ Philadelphia area playing local clubs. One Philly area DJ had a belief in his music and passed on a demo to Manfred Mann. Manfred recorded his music and Bruce gained a new audience. Ed Sciaky of WMMR / WIOQ radio never lost belief in Bruce and the two remained friends until Ed's death in 2004.
Dancing In The Dark

Brenne #13 picked this song by one of my all time favorite bands
"Golden Earring".
Band Name: Golden Earring
Golden Earring are a Dutch rock band, founded in 1961 in The Hague as the Golden Earrings (the 's' was dropped in 1969). They had international chart success with the songs "Radar Love" in 1973, "Twilight Zone" in 1982, and "When the Lady Smiles" in 1984. In their home country, they had over 40 hits and made over 30 gold and platinum albums.
My Favorite song by this band "Twilight Zone"
Twilight Zone

JT #3 sent in this gem from 1986
Band Name: Dream Academy
The Dream Academy were an English folk rock band, comprising singer/guitarist Nick Laird-Clowes; multi-instrumentalist (chiefly oboe, English horn player) Kate St John; plus keyboardist Gilbert Gabriel.
Listen to Life in a Northern town

And lastly one of my all time Favorites, Sent in by Burning Sky #107
Band Name : Big Country
Big Country is an internationally-renowned Scottish rock band formed in Dunfermline, Fife in 1981.
The height of the band's popularity was in the 1980s, although it retained a cult following for many years after, including the release of several further titles. The band's music was most recognisable for the sounds it infused with Scottish folk and martial music styles, as well as for playing and engineering their guitar driven sound to evoke the inspirational spirit of bagpipes, fiddles and other traditional folk instruments.
Try not to dance!
Big Country

Congrats to this weeks Theme winners. If you didn't win this week it doesn't mean the picks were no good, I received so many! I'll get to them eventually! We WILL have more themes upcoming!

And now for my picks this week..In keeping with the 60's 70's and 80's theme some music that rocks my world!

One of my all time favorite songs from 1971
Band Name: Rod Stewart
Rod Stewart, is a British singer-songwriter, born and raised in North London, England. He is of Scottish and English ancestry.
With his distinctive raspy singing voice, Stewart came to prominence in the late 1960s and early 1970s with The Jeff Beck Group and then Faces.
Here now one of my favorites from Rod the Mod...
Maggie May

Up Next, Once known as "The pride Of PA" Warren Zevon!
My family has a history with him so ok, maybe I'm partial, but that doesn't negate the fact he's AMAZING! I love most of warrens music, his tongue in cheek style of lyrics and his driving melodies. Sadly in 2003 Warren left us after a fight with lung cancer caused by aesbestos exposure. He is missed!

Here now one of his most popular from 1978 Werewolves of London

And the best for last, my IDOL Peter Gabriel
Formerly the front man for "Genesis" He left to pursue a solo career which did well for him. Multi gold LPs and collaborations with some of the biggest names in the industry today Peter Gabriel is well recognized by his peers as a master.
Here now a GREAT live version of my favorite song "Solsbury Hill"
Solsbury hill

Finally - songs I can relate to!!
I love Dancing in the Dark - it's one of my favourite songs ever. It represents the 80's to me - a time when I was wrinkle and worry free. When I hear the very first few notes I am transported back to my late teenage bedroom where I am impatiently waiting for my life to start (Michael Schoeffling never did turn up out the front in his red car) :)

I've loved Rod Stewart since I was a teen too. Maggie May isnt one of my favourites - I prefer Downtown Train but anything Rod does is cool imo.

I've never been a huge fan of the Beatles (Hey Jude is my favourite) but I really admire what they did for the music industry. My mum says that their long hair actually was shocking lol.

Werewolves of London is a cool song! When the movie An American Werewolf in London came out - I thought that should have been the theme song (although Bad Moon Rising was good too). Werewolves in that movie were NOT friendly or helpful, they didnt tie their undies around their back leg for later or hang out with sparkly vampires. The special effects (the transformation) was excellent I thought. Lol anyway - werewolves are cool and this song is lively and fun.

I love this week's theme. Its nice to recognize all the songs and actually like most of them!!

You can't have an Oldies selection without the Beatles. They are just so iconioc, and they were so brilliant at what they did. Not my favorite song of theirs (that love is given to Come Together) but still an awesome tune.

Bruce. The Boss. Mr. Born in the USA. My favorite of his is actually one of his "newer" pieces, Streets of Philidelphia but you just can't not like Bruce.

Twilight Zone was a song beloved by my high school theater troupe. I don't even know how the tradition was started since it was in place before I got to high school, but we always congregated backstage 30 minutes before the house opened to sing a few songs together. This was one of them. Ahhh the memories. :)

Life in a Northern Town is just one of those songs that is so uniquely 80's that even if you never listened to another song by the group, you can immediately start singing along.

My favorite Big Country song is actually Driving to Damascus, but In a Big Country is a catchy tune. :)

Maggie May... once again a good song that I really really like but not my favorite Rod Stewart piece. I have to admit to a slightly cheesy proclivity, I love Forever Young the best of all of his songs.

Give a shout out for 1978! Werewolves of London is awesome, and is it just me... or does Mr. Kid Rock have some 'splaining to do RE: his song All Summer Long? But then again, Sweet Home Alabama was out 4 years before this... so really who borrowed what from who, right?

The ever talented Mr. Peter Gabriel, le sigh. Too bad it wasn't Shock the Monkey, but Solsbury Hill is also an incredible song.

*runs off to find some osshy, gooshy love songs for next week.*
