Three decades of music and I can only submit two songs!?

mrsgunsageApr 02, 2012 2:19 pm
Secondhand Serenade has been a perpetual favorite of mine for several years. Vesely manages to capture a lot of emotional nuance in his lyrics and his voice is incredibly emotive. This particular song is something that I listened to a lot when my husband and I were going through a bad spot in our marriage because it really is all of the pain and uncertainty you feel when you're arguing constantly and have no idea if everything is fixable or not. (It was, we're good now.) :)

I could talk for ever about why Owl City in general and Alligator Sky in particular are just epic-winages, but since it was my recommendation I won't. :D

I'd never head Forty Foot Echo before, but since I am always a sucker for a guy with an awesome voice and an acoustic guitar I have already taken the liberty of flagging them on Spotify for future listening opportunities. Monster was a deep song, and if the rest of their stuff is similar I have a feeling I'll really like them.

IKR, Silver? How can I pick only TWO songs from all the awesome of those decades? I could easily find hundreds just from the 60's!

The Last Song Ever...I love it thank you for sharing...went to my playlist :)

Alligator Sky....good song..I liked the video a lot for that one.

Monster....Oh I really like that one..it makes me a bit melancholy, but it resonates..another for the playlist

thanks for all the great songs this week

Nice contribution Dragonboy...I hadn't heard them up till now but will definitley look into other songs by them. Alligator Sky was definitley not one I would have normally picked to listen to but it was pretty good...Monster was EXCELLENT "think" song...made me think BEEN THERE. Nice contribution sage.

I really really love Alligator Sky. Good choice sage! ^.^ I enjoyed it's upbeat sounds and the lyrics were very nicely fit with the shown video, I do think. I was amused that in the video they were going about making an archive of Earth. Hehe. That all of the people took off into the sky,and left Earth behind. Very neat. :D

Monster was also very nice. Very thoughtful, makes you think. A bit more melancholy than what I usually listen to but sometimes you just need those songs in your day. :D The Last Song Ever was also a bit more melancholy than what I listen to. However I couldn't get into it as much as Monster - something about the singer's voice just threw me off. I can definitely see it's appeal however.

^^

Not sure I really got into Last song ever. It just isnt my style I guess.I didnt like it.

Alligator style had me dancing in my chair snapping my fingers and just upbeat and fun.
Loved it!

Monster is dark and echos and just didnt make me like it much at all. I dont like the sound of the lead singers voice and the electronic echo they inserted.

So all in all 1 out of 3 for me this week :)

Alex, you are the inter-dimensional emperor of Typonese. LOL!!!!

KoalasaurusApr 04, 2012 2:12 am
I loved Alligator Sky. Owl City is so melodic, soothing, and trance like. It has the beats to dance too, it has the lyrics to compare to, and Adam's voice is so humble, it's like you can relate in away. Like the boy next door.

Great choice! Keep the music coming :D.

Since I can't really comment on the music this week because it's just not my type - I thought I'd dig up some info on the artists instead :)

I did not realize that Secondhand Serenade is one person. I read this on official website:
"To distinguish himself from the typical singer/songwriter, John adopts the name Secondhand Serenade - a name with far fewer limits than "John". The name Secondhand Serenade allows him to be free to do whatever he feels like, from a solo performance to ten musicians on stage at once"

Owl City is named after a story by Ambrose Bierce called “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” which apparently had a profound effect on Adam Young.

Forty Foot Echo's song Drift featured on the TV show One Tree Hill, their song Brand New Day was on the 2003 movie Freaky Friday and Drift was once again used - this time in the movie The Prince and Me in 2004.

:)

An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge is a really good short. Anything Ambrose Bierce writes is worth a read, actually. He has a stark, austere style that belies the emotional impact of what you're reading until the very end.

He was heavily influenced by his service in Union Army during the American Civil War, many of his stories have a military or war-type setting.
